the cactus lady
she approached the table as carmen & i were having breakfast in a cafe, offering plastic bags of de-spiked cactus leaves. although i had no idea what to do with them, i wanted to buy them to help her out.
no problem, said carmen, i can cook them for you. and so i bought two bags for 25 pesos (about $1.25) and although she permitted me to photograph her at our table, i much prefer this shot that i took of her when she was talking to someone else at another table. selling cactus leaves is her only means to get by. her face still haunts me.
