breakfast by candlelight

I love telling a small story in one frame, and this one I think captures the mood of Finland in winter. A red candle on a wooden table to warm the atmosphere of a sunless winter day, a bright scarf knotted around her neck against the cold, something porridgy in the metal bowl, a bag of food to take home, and her glasses to the side as she checks messages on her phone. The solitude of one woman. located @ Fleminginkatu 7, Helsinki ~ gastrocafe.fi

  • The Finns have a reputation for being shy and reluctant to engage in conversation, especially with strangers. So when this young woman came into the gastropub where Leif & I were having lunch, I hesitated a moment before asking her if I could take a photograph of her in her amazing purple coat. But she agreed with a smile, and told me she had gotten it from the local Goth store. The paint on her boots reveals she's an artist. Even her son got into the moment, striking poses. Finns are shy? Not always ;)
