Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia
Plitvice got its name from the natural phenomena that have created the lakes. In Croatian, pličina or plitvak, plitko means shallow. For centuries, water has changed the limestone, changing the landscape. The emerging travertine barriers decelerated and retained the flowing water. In 1979, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage protection program.
